Establishment of Gamma Irradiator;
Initial work for the establishment of a gamma irradiator was jointly carried out by the Ministry and the International Atomic Energy Authority. A tender board and technology evaluation committee have been appointed for the construction of the building and for purchase of machinery.

Establishment of Nanotechnology Centre;

Cabinet approval has been obtained for the establishment of a Nanotechnology centre and a workshop has been conducted to involve the public sector as well as the private sector in the formation of such a centre. The services of expatriate and local experts in nanotechnology have been mobilized.

Establishment of Research Centres on Allergy and Immunology;

The Ministry of Technology and Research has taken steps to establish a research centre for Allergy and Immunology.

Establishment of Technology Incubators;

Monaragala, Weeraketiya and Mawanella have been chosen to establish 3 incubators, where entrepreneurship is being developed. (Infrastructure facilities are provided to embark on industries based on resources available in the area) under the consultation of WAITRO,Malaysia.

Eminent Scientist Programme;

  • Prof. J.D.A. Abeysekara from Lulea University of Sweden had given his services from 25th January to 25th March 2006 on Ergonomics as follows;
  • 30 hours lectures on ''Principles of Ergonomics in Agriculture'' were conducted for graduates and undergraduates in the Department of Agriculture Ergonomics at Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture.
  • A seminar on ''Computer Ergonomics'' was conducted for the staff and students of the Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture.
  • Project proposals on Ergonomics of Agriculture in Sri Lanka were prepared.
  • Consultation facilities were given to postgraduate students in Ergonomics.

    Allocation of funds for the programmes;

Funds necessary to implement programmes to promote and popularize science in Sri Lanka have been provided to institutions by the Ministry as in Table 04.

Seminar on 'Ergonomic method to resolve issues on tea leaf plucking and tea leaf basket design' was conducted for technical officers and managers at the Tea Research Institute, Talawakelle.

Establishment of minor export crop oil extraction unit;

These units have been established in Malwana South, Yatapana, and Kegalle with the technological
assistance of ITI. Higher value opportunities for minor export crop farmers in Kegalle and Kandy where they are cultivated progressively are being provided to enable them to earn a substantial income.

Clove Oil extraction plant at Galigamuwa

  • This unit has a capacity of processing 200 kgs of cloves, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon, citronella per day. It extracts high quality aromatic oil which could be used in manufacturing of various medicines, colognes, flavours and antibacterial products.
  • The Ministry has joined hands with the Sri Lanka Standards Institute to upgrade this unit to the level where good manufacturing practices (G.M.P.) can be maintained within the unit to produce aromatic oil, targeting the foreign market.
