Vidatha Technology Transfer Programme originated as a special Budget Proposal introduced in 2005 on the request of Hon. Tissa Vitarane, Minister of Science & Technology. It envisages transferring technology from Science and Technology Research and Development Centres to village population so that they could start Micro- Small- and Medium Enterprises for finding self-employment enhancing their income for poverty alleviation. The Vidatha programme commenced in 2005 and continued in 2006,2007,2008,2009 and 2010 as well. Its project period is five years from 2005. The programme aims at transferring technology to rural areas via Vidatha Resource Centres, with a view to creating employment opportunities and to alleviate rural poverty. It has been targeted to establish 352 Vidatha resource centres covering all Divisional secretariats, for the successful implementation of the Vidatha Programme transfering technologies to the village.The programme has completed the following activities.

Each Vidatha Resource Centre is provided with 2 to 5 computers, Internet and e-mail connectivity, a vegetable dryer, a bakery oven, a coconut oil extractor, a coconut dehusker, a yoghurt incubator, and a wood gasifier.
It has been planned to provide a motor-cycle per centre, initially 50 motorcycles were distributed.
